Ballymahon is a picturesque town situated on the River Inny. The town derives its name from the Gaelic, Baile Mathá, town of Mahon. Mahon, King of Thomond, fought a famous battle in the vicinity of Ballymahon at Shrule, where he defeated Fergal's son Ruarc and laid claim to the area.

Ballymahon is also synonymous with the famous poet Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), The Ballymahon area is said to have had a seminal influence on Goldsmith and formed the inspiration for much of his poetry. Ballymahon has a fine thomondmonument on the main street commemorating the poet. The area is also the centre of John Keegan "Leo" Casey country, with the River Inny and surrounding localities featuring prominently in the poets work.
